What to wear for tandem paragliding in summer and winter

Dress for the take-off, not for the valley. It is cooler up there, and in the air you also feel the wind.

Updated 2026-11-07

Why it is colder at the take-off

In the standard atmosphere the temperature drops by about 6.5 °C per 1,000 metres. First (2,150 m) is about 1,100 metres above Grindelwald (1,034 m), Beatenberg (1,370 m) about 800 metres above Interlaken (566 m). On the day it can differ, but count on it being clearly cooler.

Checklist

  • Sturdy shoes with grip, for example trainers or hiking shoes. No sandals or flip-flops, you run a few steps at take-off.
  • Long trousers and a windproof jacket, even in summer.
  • Sunglasses, ideally with a strap.
  • Sun cream in summer and in the snow.
  • In winter: gloves, a warm layer and a thin hat that fits under the helmet.

Questions before you fly

Do I need special clothing?

No. Normal outdoor clothes for the weather, sturdy shoes and sunglasses are enough. The pilot provides harness and helmet.

Can I fly in winter?

Yes. Flights over Interlaken run all year when the weather allows, and in winter there is also the flight from Männlichen. Wear gloves and a warm layer.
